So Toy Story 3.
I know when it comes to an trilogy, people usually say that the second is the best and the third is the weakest of the three.
But I agree that I love (most) all of the Toy Story trilogy equally but upon re-watching the third instalment, I can safely say this is my favourite Toy Story movie, maybe because I'm a bit bias towards this movie because I played the Wii video game (peak licenced video by the way) and I Used to have the DvD and constantly re-watch the movie movie over and over again.
So when it comes to an conclusion, its not an easy task to do but I think the movie successful earn its spot and what a good conclusion should do.
So without a further-a-do, let's get into it:
What makes a third movie great?: The third movie must at least have these factors:
1. Payoff to the second and the first movie and round up the characters
2. Take the scale bigger then the last two
3. It must stands on its own
So how dose the movie achieved this? Well, let's talk about the plot then.
It's about after the events of Toy Story 2, Andy is now 17 and he no longer plays with his toys. However when Andy puts all the toys (except for Woody) in the trash bag but the toys gotten mistaken that Andy didn't cared for them but really he's mom accidentally and unaware puts them to the garbage.
So the toys decided to go to Sunnyside but Woody is hesitate to go to a daycare.
I know misunderstanding tropes can be very annoying but I agrue that I think it makes sense here because 1 the toys haven't been played and they didn't see on Andy's mind except for Woody because Woody deep down knows Andy dose care for his toys, he just dosen't show it much and 2 Andy calling them "junk" was an reaction because he himself don't know what to do with his toys, so he's just kind of stuck there.
It even makes more sense the reason nobody believes in Woody (besides Buzz) is because he's been Andy's favourite and Woody saw the whole thing played out and they don't get to see because they felt like Andy backstab them.
Also before I go any further, I want to quickly mention the animation and I forgot how good it actually is, I adore the lighting effect and the more dynamic shots. I also love the detail of each location changed colours as the movie goes on.
Also the score is incredible, both capturing a child like wonder like Bonnie's play time or the crazy side like the toddlers and some just goes so hard like The Claw. This adds on and this feels like an ending they want to end but back to the plot again.
So after dropping to Sunnyside, the toys where greeted by Lotso (which I'll talk later on) and at first the toys seem so happy but Woody on Andy's side wants to go back. This scene is so sad because you see both sides of the characters, Woody dosen't want to move on his life and be with his friend while he's true friends wants to move on life.
You also can tell Woody and Buzz still cared about each other and seeing them leaving each other is just so heart breaking.
Woody, now with Bonnie have the best play time he ever had but he was told by Chuckles about Lotso's backstory (again, I'll well get to later on) and Woody finds out the truth of Sunnyside. So he head back to Sunnyside to bust out of this prison and with a Buzz Lighter who reversed himself but then they (kind of) fix him but now he's Spanish.
Funny story, I went to Spain in Valencia and in the action figure corner there's a Buzz Lighter action figure. That makes the sense even funnier for me.
So as you can tell, they want to do a break out kind of story the filmmakers are approaching and I think the did an excellent job of showing how dangerous Sunnyside is because of Lotso's control.
Mr Potato Head analysis: For out the Toy Story reviews, for some reason I've never talk about Mr Potato Head because the Potato Head Toy line is my favourite Hasbro toy line.
So what about him? What makes this movie great is that everyone gets to shine in their roles and none of them feel like filler or stands around in the background for some reason. Everyone gets to progress the plot and they make it a breka out movie and I love howmit shows everyone cares about each other and for the longest time Mr Potato Head never cared for Woody because he's been Andy's favourite.
But he's not all heartless inside because of his wife, you can tell he cares about her deeply and after all in Toy Story 2 he did find her ear and now she lost her eye. Though he was the first one to distrust Woody and he's one how complaint at the first 10mins.
But after the toddlers wreck them (well I did worse, with my toys then this) and I'll probably Mr Potato Head got the worst, I mean i can't stop thinking about this ugly looking shoving Mr Potato Head's eye up his nose.
Anyways, I do like the scene where the toys realised it was all just a mistake and he just said "wow" and Ham just tell him off for his distrust for the entire time.
After Woody returned, he actually seems to pleased for Woody and he was the first to stall Ken, Buzz and Baby and him I. The box abandoned his body for a tortilla (which Jessie pulled out) and he actually flash the light to Woody to let know Lotso is asleep. I really like that scene because it shows how much Mr Potato Head grown and put his bias aside, while he still is the stickler but he always shown respect.
Even at the end he congrats Woody on going to college.
The reason I do this talk about Mr Potato Head of all characters is because of his voice actor Don Rickles since sadly passed away, he really did gives his best shot and this is probably my favourite performance of him.
Why Lostso is an amazing villain: What also makes this movie so great is the villain, Lotso.
What makes him great is that he's a twist villains, at the start you might think he's a good guy by his kind tone of voice and lines but also his appearance aswell but the movie tricked you that actually fact his the movie's antagonist.
You might think its Ken, because of the vending machine part and he was the one who kidnapped Buzz.
What also makes his character so interesting is because how genuis he is, his a constant threat to the toys by the power he has with his brain washed "friends" and he think that he's superior to everyone else because he controls the toys. He manage to convince every Toy to be as cruel as him, they will join to gain respect and not be destroyed by the toddlers.
He's one of these characters that is so hate-able but at the same you sympathetic because its not his fault that the kid (Dasiy) replaced him. Daisy ruined him and this caused his down and he's simliar to Jessie's backstory where the two used to have owners that are their best friends but they dumped them, but the difference is Jessie saw the whole thing and she moved on while Lotso taken it so personally he's life is ruined.
That's the unfortunate truth is that we as humans may not care for the toys and almost like faking the emtion is some way, or we even don't care the replace ment because the first Toy is your life and finding the other feels hollow and empty because that first Toy means so much to you.
Lotso convinced himself that he is trash and he only believes that every Toy is trash.
I love the dynamic of Woody and Lotso of being two different leaders, but its the way they approached it. Woody is genuinely a good person and he never gives up on Andy because Ansu always loved him because of the development of Woody and Buzz of the first movie.
While Lotso got replaced, permanently. So because he thinks human or children saw him as trash, he'll make everyone suffer as he did in the caterpillar room with the toddlers.
I love that he actually ties back of Stinky Pete's warning of children growing up and forgot about their toys as seeing less.
The scene where Lotso was confronted by Woody if remembering his past with Daisy, Woody gives the tag that belong to Baby (in the most chilling scene for out the entire movie), Lotso reveals his monster side of smashing Baby's tag and saying to him that Daisy is not his mother any more.
Then as a satisfying pay off, Baby chucks Lotso to the bin and what's even more satisfying is that Baby has always been a tool and it shows it dosen't matter if someone is vauleless, you will always have worth ,even if they can't see it.
Lotso isn't finished is because he grabs Woody's foot and this let all the toys (except for Barbie and Ken) to the dump.
I love that Lotso fakes his emotions to pretend that he is in serrious danger and manipulate Woody's kindness. He not only just leaves these toys for doom but he still believes his false world view that nothingof being a toy is worth it in life, he's truly a monster.
This leads to the most satisfying punishment and a very fitting one. He becomes the garbage by tiring up to a garbage truck.
The beautiful ending: The scene where the toys almost get disintegrated and saved by the Claw (thanks to the Aliens) is the most bone chilling I've ever watched in my life and it gives me so much goosebumps and the scene Mr Potato Head thanks the Aliens, even calling them their sons is so wholesome.
Then there's the scene where Andy drops his toys to Bonnie and played with them for the last time, and leave them as Bonnie grabs Woody and Buzz and she shakes Woody's hand a goodbye, while Woody says:"So long, Partner."
Then the camera pands away to the toys and to the clouds, a nod to Andy's room. As the closer of Andy's life, its perfect.
Makes me cry and its the most beautiful ending out of any of the Toy Story movies as a brilliant sendoff and a hoorayto the franchise.
Closing Thoughts: So overall, I think Toy Story 3 is a great conclusion and I'm glad it wasn't the original concept for it.
If you don't know what I'm saying, a video by Bullet & Blockbuster did a whole video on that and detailing the original plot of the movie if you want to see it for yourself.
Toy Story 3 is a great masterpiece and just a really good ending that did a grant last adventure for all the toys. I will forever love this movie.
So that's everything I got to say!
Rest in peace, Don Rickles.
