In recognition of International Women's Day in March 2018 and in support of Anim18 (the BFI FAN celebration of British Animation, led by Chapter and Film Hub Wales) Into Film's Spring Screenings programme is all about British and International Women in Animation. Highlighting a variety of career opportunities such as VFX supervisor, Puppeteer, Producer and Director within the animation industry, and through the careers of the women that have made these films, we hope to inspire young women and young men aged between 16 and 19 to think about following their own paths into the world of animation.

Synopsis

Winning a place on a top-secret project, computer coder Caleb is helicoptered to the secluded home of Internet company owner Nathan. Revealing that he has built a female robot called Ava, Caleb has been enlisted to test her capacity for thought and feeling. Under the gaze of CCTV, Caleb interviews Ava and finds himself not only impressed by her intelligence but also increasingly attracted to her. However, as Nathan's and Ava’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, Caleb is forced to question the ethics of the experiment. Winding up to a grippingly claustrophobic ending, the film slickly explores the morality and threat in creating artificial intelligence while sparking broader discussions on how gender and sexuality inform human identity.
