Bande De Filles (Girlhood)
This spirited coming-of-age story follows Marieme, a teenager growing up in a housing estate on the outskirts of Paris with her younger sister and abusive older brother. With few options for escape from a difficult life, Marieme falls in with a group of girls who encourage her to quit school, change her name and wear different clothes. Her new identity and close friendships offer confidence and a release from her troubles, but Marieme questions if she will be able to gain the freedom and independence she seeks. Despite some difficult subjects this film captures some of the exuberance of youth, never patronising its subjects and featuring a fantastic pop soundtrack.
Strong language, violence, drug use.
