Synopsis

Charlotte Bronte's much-filmed 1847 novel is reinvigorated for a new generation in this brooding period romance. Beautifully shot, the feature drips with gothic atmosphere, as 19th-century governess Jane Eyre recalls the turbulent events that made her suddenly flee her post at spooky Thornfield Hall. It's a dark journey that brings back memories of a childhood filled with misery, before focussing on the crux of Jane's current distress: the intense relationship with her mysterious Thornfield boss, Edward Rochester. Unpredictable yet fascinating, the older man gradually steals the teen’s heart, only for a terrible, long-hidden secret to rip it apart. With tragedy once again dominating her life, can Jane ever find real happiness, or will the ghosts of the past haunt her eternally?

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
