Spring Screening 2018

In spring 2019 we're inviting young audiences to celebrate LGBTQ+ titles which have historical significance, as we commemorate fifty years since the Stonewall riots through our Spring Screenings programme for LGBT History Month (February). Book tickets via our Events page or browse the full list further down this page.

In recognition of rapidly changing attitudes amongst children and young people around aspects of sexuality and gender identity, we are excited to present a series of historically significant titles for LGBT History Month. For teenagers, our programme offers a diverse range of content representing aspects of the LGBTQ+ experience in the UK and beyond, from both past and present. For younger audiences, our focus is on aspects of identity, inclusion, equality and the challenging of gender stereotypes.

These screenings will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a series of protests in June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, widely considered to be the catalyst which spawned the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Titles Include...

Our Spring Screenings feature a myriad of titles, ranging from 1950s classics that circumnavigated the Hays Code (which prevented on-screen homosexual relationships for decades in Hollywood), to contemporary releases, which in 2018 included - rather shockingly - only the first studio coming-of-age film to feature an LGBT protagonist. Films about the Stonewall riots are joined by stories of LGBT relationships in the world of professional football and titles that explore transgender issues and the controversial practice of gay "conversion therapy". These facets of LGBTQ+ life and more will be explored, with titles aimed at young people of both Primary and Secondary age.

For these film screenings - all of which will take place at BFI Film Audience Network venues across the UK - we're working with partners to source expert speakers and plan special events, including Queer Film Network, a group of UK-wide LGBT programmers; Peccadillo Pictures, the UK's leading distributor of LGBT content; and BFI Flare, the UK's premier LGBTQ+ film festival. Further details on these speakers and special events will follow soon, so keep an eye out for further announcements.

With thanks to support and guidance from Stonewall, who have offered additional ideas for discussing any of the themes from the programme. Stonewall also produce resources and guidance for young people.
