Anti-Bullying

Bullying is, unfortunately, something that many people will experience over the course of their lives, with the problem being particularly prevalent in schools and amongst young people. Combating bullying, and helping young people to develop the confidence and skills to recognise, challenge and prevent it, are hugely important.

Film can be a excellent way of broaching this sensitive subject in a safe and impersonal way. The idea of respect for yourself and others - or the consequences when this is lacking - is examined in many films, providing a starting point for discussion and the formation of anti-bullying strategies. Having self-respect and maintaining one's self-esteem is a vital step in tackling bullying behaviour, both for the victims of bullying and those who carry it out.

Anti-Bullying week - co-ordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance - takes place this year between 15 - 19 November, and shines a spotlight on bullying, encouraging all children, teachers and parents to take action against bullying throughout the year. Our collection of film lists, resources and news articles - which you can explore in the tabs below - offer a great way to explore the issue of bullying in your club or classroom.

We're also keen to develop teachers' confidence in tackling anti-bullying through film, using the medium as a tool to examine appropriate behaviours through analysis of on-screen action and enabling students to positively express their thoughts, voice and learning through filmmaking.
