To celebrate the recent cinema release of How to Train Your Dragon, we launched a brand-new learning resource. Beyond Boundaries, created in collaboration with Universal Pictures UK, is a cross-curricular learning sequence for learners aged 7-12 that draws on the characters and rich world of How to Train Your Dragon.
As part of the resource, we ran a 'Roar and Soar' competition, which asked young people to bring the legend to life by creating their very own dragon. Learners were encouraged to showcase their dragon's special powers and personality through detailed descriptions and imaginative designs.
Congratulations to Grace, aged 14, from Craigmarloch School in Port Glasgow, Scotland, whose charmingly drawn dragon - named Teapot - has a particular passion milky for cups of tea, spitting toxic gas and causing earthquakes if he doesn't get his favourite beverage.
Grace has won a private screening of How To Train Your Dragon for her whole class to enjoy.
"The competition was an amazing opportunity to integrate English, media, and art into a fantastic end-of-year activity for our pupils", said Anna Cunningham-Piotrowski, an English teacher at Craigmarloch School. "Creating dragons fired up all imaginations and resulted in a large number of entries."
Check out Grace's winning entry and meet Teapot below.
We'd also like to give a special mention to two runners-up: Mei, aged 14, from Nower Hill High School in London, and Lily, aged 15, from The Green Room Foundation in Windsor.
"I feel really proud of coming runner-up in the competition", said Mei. "I originally entered it just for fun, but it allowed me to develop my imagination and artistic skills. I don't normally use colour pencils when drawing, so it was a fun challenge for me. I'm glad I developed my skills and was a part of this exciting opportunity."
Mei and Lily have each won a How To Train Your Dragon merchandise bundle.
Our Beyond Boundaries resource is a comprehensive two-lesson plan sequence for learners aged 7-12, featuring two PowerPoint presentations, detailed lesson plans, teachers' notes, and much more. Packed full of interactive and adaptable materials inspired by the film, this resource is designed to engage learners and support attainment across core curriculum subjects including English/literacy, history and RSE.
Beyond Boundaries is a fun resource that will immerse your class in How to Train Your Dragon as a new-yet-recognisable stimulus to engage learners in a range of creative writing and sensory activities. Learners will take inspiration from the film to craft their own epic adventure stories and will build an understanding of leadership skills through character exploration and inference.
