Beyond Boundaries, created in collaboration with Universal Pictures UK, is our cross-curricular learning sequence for learners aged 7-12 that draws on the characters and rich world of How To Train Your Dragon, in cinemas Monday June 9.

How To Train Your Dragon is a stunning live-action re-imagining of the much-loved animated film. On the rugged island of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon.

Our Beyond Boundaries resource is a comprehensive two-lesson plan sequence, featuring two PowerPoint presentations, detailed lesson plans, teachers’ notes, and much more. Packed full of interactive and adaptable materials inspired by the film, this resource is designed to engage learners and support attainment across core curriculum subjects including English/literacy, history and RSE.

This resource also includes:

Lead by Example activity sheet

Learners will work in pairs to rank leadership characteristics in order of importance from the perspective of different characters in the film. What does it mean to be a leader?

Who is Hiccup activity sheet

Encourage your class to use their inference skills to complete a ‘role on the wall’ for the character of Hiccup. Learners will reflect on what we can learn about Hiccup from the film trailer, and what they can then infer about his feelings and inner characteristics.

Daring Dragon activity sheet

Foster a love of storytelling with our fun creative writing activity. Learners will entrust their peers to select the key components for their story from a range of options, before crafting their own epic adventures.

Power Poster home learning sheet

Take the legend home with our empowering design activity. Invite your class to design a motivational poster for Hiccup. What top confidence boosting tips would your learners include to help him?

A chance to win a private screening of How To Train Your Dragon!

Challenge learners to get creative and use their drawing and writing skills to create their own unique dragon in our Roar and Soar competition.

The winner will receive a private screening of How To Train Your Dragon to enjoy with their class! Plus, there are film merchandise prizes up for grabs for two runners-up.

For full details of how to enter, download our Roar and Soar competition sheet.

The competition deadline is Friday 20 June 2025 – good luck!

Updating our resources

We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.

What our educators say

"As an alternative provision for learners who are not in mainstream school we use your resources in a slightly different way as they generally find it hard to watch a full length film. They are, however fantastic. "
