Developed as a result of six years of research between Into Film and its partners, Teaching Literacy Through Film harnesses the power of film to make a lasting impact on your pupils’ literacy skills.

Designed as a series of flexible and short learning experiences to fit around your busy teaching schedule, each module will introduce simple strategies to inspire your learners to improve speaking and listening, comprehension and writing attainment. We hope that this free and accessible course will support your literacy teaching during the difficult circumstances currently facing educators due to Covid-19.

Dive into the modules that match your current classroom needs or follow the entire learning journey with us; ideal in these very busy times. You’ll have the chance to complete fun literacy activities, get advice from Into Film experts and share your experiences with fellow educators on the course. Each module contains the added bonus of downloadable, easy-to-use, curriculum-linked resources to engage your learners in the classroom.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Analyse film as a text using key frameworks to develop comprehension, speaking and listening skills
  • Inspire writing in a range of genres using film stills and short film highlights as stimuli
  • Develop prediction, discussion and description skills through film sound
  • Embed character analysis, inference and deduction skills through film
  • Deliver simple film activities to assess pupils’ understanding
  • Use the course to support your own professional development, as well as whole school improvement through an action research project.
