Filmmaking is a powerful tool for self-expression. It’s also an engaging strategy to develop transferable literacy skills. In this free course, we’ll explore how filmmaking can inspire pupils of all abilities to get creative while embedding literacy, collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Whether you’re a seasoned filmmaker or a complete beginner, you’ll work through each stage of the process to create your very own literacy film to share with others on the course and inspire your class. Along the way, you’ll get advice from Into Film Experts and get the chance to discuss your experiences with fellow educators.

Supported by downloadable lesson resources to use back in your classroom, Filmmaking for Primary Literacy will cover fun filmmaking activities and introduce a simple five-step framework to support pupils from their initial ideas all the way to exhibiting their final masterpiece.

What topics will we cover?

Together, we will learn how to:

  • Run an effective filmmaking project with young people
  • Plan short films to embed key literacy skills
  • Use simple filmmaking equipment and software
  • Develop reflective thinking to support learning.

What will you achieve?

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Plan, film and edit your own literacy-focused short film
  • Design new filmmaking projects to address curriculum targets
  • Support learners through each phase of filmmaking
  • Implement in-class activities to embed peer and self-review skills.
