This course is part of Teaching Literacy Through Film, a series of short learning experiences focusing on specific areas of literacy.

Discover how film can inspire active listening and focused discussion in your classroom with Developing Speaking and Listening Through Sound.

This free, short course explores engaging ideas to enhance those fundamental speaking and listening skills that underpin all learning. You’ll also find activities to supercharge your pupils’ descriptive writing by putting them in the role of a sound effects artist or audio describer.

We’ll guide you through the simple steps to deliver these activities in class and give you the chance to try them out as you learn. Along the way, you’ll be able to share your ideas with fellow educators and get access to beautiful short films and downloadable lesson resources that will give you everything you need to get started with your pupils.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Analyse film as a text to develop pupils’ speaking and listening skills
  • Develop prediction and comprehension skills in pupils, using short film highlights
  • Inspire descriptive writing through film sound
  • Deliver simple film activities to assess pupils’ understanding.
