Soar into a new learning adventure with Migration: Habitat Heroes, created in partnership with Universal Pictures and Illumination. Celebrating the release of Migration, arriving in cinemas February 2, this two-lesson sequence immerses pupils aged 6-12 on an epic journey.

Drawing on the Migration trailer and the experiences of the film's feathered flock of characters, the resource will engage learners with the awe-inspiring natural world and the vibrancy of urban wildlife. Migration: Habitat Heroes supports the new National Education Nature Park Policy, and makes cross-curricular links to:

  • Science
  • Geography
  • Art & Design
  • PSHE
  • Citizenship
  • English/literacy

Activities exploring habitats, migration and biodiversity plunge pupils into the wonders of wildlife, and offer opportunities to explore how growth comes from embracing new experiences:

  • Lesson One introduces habitats and migration.
  • A Migration Postcard activity prompts pupils to write creatively about how one of the film's characters might feel before embarking on their journey.
  • Learners will build on this with our cross-generational Beyond the Pond homework activity, which tasks them with interviewing an adult relative or family friend about an experience beyond their comfort zone.
  • Lesson Two focuses on community science, biodiversity in schools and positive citizenship.
  • The Our Local Area observation activity encourages learners to do some exploring of their own, seeking out bird and insect habitats in your school grounds.

Enter your habitat heroes in our competition!

In Migration, the Mallard family learn the hard way that the city poses many threats to wildlife. Our Habitat Helpers competition challenges your pupils to come up with a habitat, initiative or invention that helps wildlife stay safe within the urban environment.

The contest takes inspiration from the Migration trailer and offers a chance to win a Conservation Kit worth £140 for their school providing everything they need to turn a corner of the school grounds into a haven for wildlife. The winner will also receive an exciting Migration merchandise pack.

Send all entries in ahead of the closing date of Friday 1 March 2024. Terms and conditions apply.

Updating our resources

We have developed a large catalogue of educational resources since launching in 2013, and some references and terminology will inevitably have dated as society and language evolves. We are aware of this and will be updating resources when our production schedule allows.
