'Meet Me In St. Louis' follows the lives of the Smith family in St Louis through the seasons. The Smiths are a typical family, teasing and bickering with each other but they also definitely care for each other. Even though the family are the main characters the film mostly follows Esther's point of view except at the beginning and at Halloween. Esther (played by Judy Garland) is a middle sister of four sisters and we follow her story as she is falling in love, but at Halloween it follows the younger sisters when something awful happens. Will they be forced to leave St. Louis forever when the sisters desperately want to stay?
The costumes change colour when the seasons change. In summer the costumes are in pastel colours, in autumn you see more brown outfits and in winter they wear more festive reds. This only really occurs with the women's costumes because most of the male characters are in suits because the film is set in 1903 and 1904.
There are three main catchy songs for me. These are 'Meet Me in St Louis', 'The Trolley Song' and 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'. Although popular now, this film is the first place where 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' was first heard.
You can tell that this film was not made in the 21st century because of the style of the picture. It feels less natural but is brightly-coloured. This was actually made in 1945.
I like Judy Garland films because she is a brilliant singer and actress, so if you like 'The Wizard of Oz', try watching this. I love 'Little Women' too which is another story about a typical family full of girls, so if you liked that film, try this happy, funny, colourful musical.
