Fast-paced, ingeniously plotted French thriller that fully rewards the effort you have to put into keeping track of all the twists.

This being an adaptation of a quite well known book I wasn’t expecting much, but I was rather pleasantly surprised. I had read one of Coben’s books, so I expected this to be another roller coaster of emotions and twists. I was kind of disappointed as I guess you just don’t get the same feelings from seeing something acted on screen as you would in your head. I liked this film though; maybe this is just because I haven’t read the book and so I don’t know the bits that have been changed, or how things are different to what I would have imagined. Rather than being another ‘plod-along’ movie, you are left kind of the edge of your seat as the plot pans out in front of you; you can foresee that there are going to be twists and I had sort of guessed, but just when I thought it couldn’t change anymore they throw another little twist in, nothing major, but enough to make you think.

Have to say I thought the main character had a remarkable resemblance to Nicolas Sarkozy which is ironic as the films in French! Not the biggest fan of subtitling, and there were places where the conversation was just flowing too fast for me to keep up so I had to rewind and go back over it to make sure I’d understood everything. Also I found I got rather lost in it all, maybe it’s because of the French names or something, but it took me a while to figure out who everyone was and how they were related. Still a bit confused about the opening scenes though, but I’ll live.

All in all a good film; quite obviously not a multimillion-pound block buster, but a good plot coupled with capable acting made it rather interesting. The storyline was ‘almost’ believable. Would like to think that the main character does incur some charges for causing the major car pile-up and being involved with gangsters, I would be rather worried by the French legal system if he didn’t get some kind of fine or something at the least!
