Seven Samurai is the best world cinema film i have ever seen. It was made in Japan in 1954 by Akira Kurosawa. It is about a small farming village asking seven samurai to defend them against the bandits who would burn down their houses and steal all their rice. All that the farmers could offer them was food and a place to sleep. Set in the 17th century, I learned about Japenese culture which I did not know a lot about. It is in black and white and in Japenese with subtitles and is 195 minutes long, but don't let this put you off: it's a great film which maintains suspense throughout. This film influenced many later westerns as they tried to beat the Japanese with this fantastic film. Eventually they came extremely close with the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN which has almost exactly the same plot except with cowboys and not samurai.
