Wow, this is an outstanding black and white production. The Hound of the Baskervilles is a Sidney Lanfield film of the classic horror story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Originally produced in 1939, it would have made shivers ripple up and down your spine then and still has the same effect today. The plot centres around Mr Sherlock Homes as the genius detective and his trusty companion Dr Watson as they both try to solve the case of the terrible and mysterious deaths of members of the Baskerville family. Only one now remains, Hugo Baskerville. They must now all work together to find the answers to the secrets that have remained hidden and unknown for generations and so save Hugo’s life. Were these horrific crimes committed by someone or some aweful menace? This is a fantastic film that I would recommend to anyone who loves suspense. Even the saying “elementary my dear Watson” is as well known today as it was when the film was originally shown over 70 years ago. The only fault that I can find is that its run time is a short 80 minutes. I never wanted it to end. Before seeing this I would never have wanted to watch an old “classic”. Therefore I can happily rate this piece of magnificence a definite 4 and a half stars out of five and a big smile from me
