This is not a film that I was particularly interested in watching, but after sitting down and taking the time to sit and watch the film I can accept the pure brilliance of everything about it. This film is so good it may even be in my top 10 favorite films of all time. The film brilliantly captures the brilliance, and the torment of life for John Merrick (real name Joseph) who was born in Victorian England with a disability that causes bodily disfigurements. It showed us how ghastly a society can be towards something that they don't understand so they decide to shun it in ignorance. One thing that should be acknowledged is that they did not try to portray John Merrick as a monster, but as a human being with emotions and opinions. It was a pure pleasure to watch a film in the afternoon where you feel every actor in the film has played their part to make this the masterpiece that it is. The choice to screen the film in black and white was a questionable because at several points in the film it gave the impression that it was an old horror film, which is not what it should represent. The script writing was a giant effort for the writers who had the hard task of making the main character stand out but not cause any offence to the memory of John Merrick. It was good to see a film with two main characters that you can enjoy and watch their friendship grow. My favorite actor of all was definitely Anthony Hopkins who plays empathic surgeon Frederick Treves, his performance captured the kind human nature of Treves. The camera sequencing was second to very few. Also a very, very good job by director David Lynch as this was only his second film. Overall a tear jerking film that will still remain a classic for years to come. I full heartedly reccomend this to true film lovers. To sum this film up shortly it is a deeply moving true story of one mans trials and tribulations and how he chooses to overcome them. FILM PERFECTION 9.5 out of 10
