Some movies don’t need a storyline as such due to the situation or lifestyle the characters must adhere to (The Hurt Locker immediately comes to mind) and can captivate the audience. This is the case with ‘The Road’, it doesn’t have a strict storyline yet you can enjoy the film, although in this case using the word ‘enjoy’ is almost mocking the horrendous station the characters face. ‘The Road’ follows a man and a boy (who are unnamed throughout the movie) as they walk through an apocalyptical America with only a shopping cart of scavenged food, a gun with two bullets and each other. The movie shows the dangers of their mission in the way they have to hide from rapist cannibals, find whatever food they can and ensure they don’t die of the extreme conditions. It’s interesting to see how towards the end of the movie, the man is so hardened to life that the boy almost has to act as his conscious to ensure he doesn’t go mad, a very emotional aspect to the film. The movie has a dark tone to it but it’s so unlike anything I’ve ever watched (I Am Legend and The Book Of Eli are exceptions) that it’s worth at least one watch. And it definitely toys with your emotions. The man has such a love for his son that it pains you to watch, as a loving father has to teach his son how to shoot himself if anything happens. I strongly advice everyone to watch this, I would love to see this at my FILMCLUB then to discus it afterwards! ‘The Road’ does indeed take you down a road you wont easily forget.
