A beautiful tale of love and loss, memory loss and multicoloured hair. Starring Jim Carrey in one of his first serious roles (most of his best-known films were released before this one), Eternal Sushine of the Spotless Mind tells a story of Joel Barish meeting a crazy young girl, Clementine (played by Kate Winslet), falling in love with her, and the ensuing, mysterious breakup... Clementine, the impulsive romantic, has decided that dating Joel has become boring, so she removes all of her memories of him. Heartbroken, Joel angrily decides to wipe his own memories of her.. and ends up realising he still loves her. Joining the cute couple are four staff members of Lacuna Inc. ("lacuna" meaning a gap or missing part, in this case, of memory), receptionist Mary (Kirsten Dunst), Lecuna technicians Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood), and head of Lecuna, Howard (Tom Wilkinson). More than insignificant background characters, they have their own plotlines, with Mary and Stan in a seemingly normal relationship, and Patrick also being Clementine's new boyfriend. A beautiful blend of romantic comedy and science fiction thriller, ETotSM will certainly tug at heartstrings. Beautiful CGI, excellent camerawork and editing, and marvellous storytelling, as the majority of the film takes place in Joel's mind as his memories are slowly removed. Your eyes will not be able to look away, and your brain will not want to miss a scene or a single word of dialogue, this fantastically complex film finally allows Carrey to shine in a thrilling spotlight, away from the comedic typecast characters he plays in films like "Ace Ventura", "The Mask" and "Bruce Almighty". Eternal Sunshine.. is awarded a full five stars, and is fully deserving of each and every one. One of my favourite, this brain tugging and heart pulling film will certain become your favourite too!
