With its fluidly drawn and painterly-dark animation style, suitable voice cast, adrenaline-fuelled action sequences and nightmarish sci-fi horror scenery, Akira succeeds in being possibly one of the best anime films ever made due to Katsuhiro Otomo's careful adaptation that doesn't let up on the stylish brutality and violent sci-fi fantasy of its manga source material.
