Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl is a action-packed, swashbuckling film about Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), his quest to reclaim his ship from the evil Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and also his attempt to avoid capture by the colonists of Port Royal. The film also features blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and his mission to save his damsel in distress (Keira Knightley) from Captain Barbossa and his pirate crew. The film employs clever use of props and setting to set the atmosphere of colonial era Caribbean - with authentic muskets and barrels filled to the brim with exotic spices. The ships used in the film are also exceptionally well-crafted, you can view at least 4 different ships throughout the course of the film and each has its own distinguishing features to tell them apart. The costumes worn by both the colonists and pirates create a distinct contrast, the pirates with their unkept, bedraggled attire and the colonists wearing smart, sharp uniforms. As regards to the acting, Johnny Depp (Captain Jack Sparrow) stands out as the clear leader, as he leads his crew on a expedition to reclaim the Black Pearl from Captain Barbossa's undead minions. He commands an air of authority throughout the film, which marks him out as an individual, with a deep fondness of sailing - and rum! Keira Knighley also deserves a mention, as she portrays the damsel in distress who is kidnapped by pirates - though she doesn't go without a fight. She has a talent to change throughout he film from a pampered, colonial heiress to a rebellious, sailor who seems at home on the sea. In conclusion, this is a perfect film for anyone who loves action (especially someone who likes pirates!) and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a exciting, easy-to-follow film. Exceptional setting and talented acting makes this a must-watch film that will entertain audiences for years to come.
