I didn't really know what to expect in my first screening. I have to say I was instantly drawn in to the location and the back story the that Pedro Almodovar had so kindly provided. Mainly the entirely different culture that existed in this town and of course the strange sense of belonging. After about ten minutes of character building, the audience is thrown into the drama element of this Spanish film when an unexpected turn of events takes place, it's no wonder the town is dominated by women if this is the case. Penelope Cruz does a wonderful job through out the film, making her character one in which we can confide in. I definitely feel as if the actors in the film really make it a gem to watch. Raimunda, the character Penelope Cruz plays, sets an excellent example for the role of women. In every scene that Penelope is placed in, she takes control and tackles problems head first and I for one am glad to see such a role model for women. This however for me is pretty much the only thing that the film has going for it, don't get me wrong, the narrative is interesting and there is always something that we as an audience have to focus on but it falls off as the film progresses. Penelope Cruz is definitely the person that keeps this boat afloat. Despite Cruz taking the film and holding it afloat, it would be wrong of me to not give Pedro Almodovar some credit, after all his plot twists and interesting back alley routes that we as an audience are taken on definitely are very important components to the film. Pedro always manages to keep us entertained by offering us a little bit more of the story, it could be argued however that it was dragged out a little too long, after the 'nitty gritty' had taken place and loose ends are taken care of, we are once again placed back into the wild goose chase. until of course we arrive at the all important end where I feel as an audience we are all left satisfied, all of our questions are answered as we cross the finish line. I'm glad I've watched this film, it was a nice experience and has definitely allowed me to broaden my film knowledge and may lead to me watching another Spanish film. Foreign cinema has always interested me and it's great to get away from a classic and predictable Hollywood movie. Volver is a nice watch and will easily keep you entertained until you reach the interesting end.
