Explosive sequel, with Peter Parker still struggling with everyday teenage dilemmas, as well as those that come with being a crime...

I decided to see the insanely hyped up sequel to 2012's reboot of the Marvel Comics franchise 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and no I did not see it purely for Andrew Garfield in spandex. As someone who enjoys the marvel films and has seen nearly all of them, I was slightly disappointed when I saw this film.

Instead of the usual action packed Marvel/Superhero films, this one was focused on adolescence: indecision and doubt, mood swings, romance and jealousy. Basically everything that comes with being a teenager. Although this in some ways makes the film more relatable to the younger audience, I feel it isn't befitting for the type of film it was advertised to be.

The focus on Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy's relationship really makes the film drag on. The plot seems to be a lot about them trying to get their relationship right And although superheroes always have a love interest I felt like this one was too central in this film for it to be classed as an action film.

Nevertheless, the fight scenes (although they didn't allow tension to be built up effectively and they were quite short) were epic video-gamelike confrontations. The few moments where there were fleets of overturned NYPD patrol cars, scores of pedestrians scurrying amok, fireballs, head-spinning aerial combat made the film for me. The effects did not disappoint at all despite the almost weak and slightly flawed plot of the actual film.

In conclusion, I think that The Amazing Spider Man 2 is a disappointment for people that know a lot about marvel and their films (like me). However for others who prefer a more romantically inclined action film I strongly recommend it as if I wasn't a marvel geek, I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more.
