Looking for a dark animated film for a mature audience? Then look no further than this masterpiece, The Plague Dogs! IMPORTANT NOTE: For the sake of reviewing the film as a whole, I will be reviewing the uncut 99 minute version. Which is a lot more darker, mature and has a lot more blood then the 82 minute version. But is a better film overall. Even though both versions are rated PG, I do NOT recommend children watch the uncut version without a parent/guardian viewing it first. Reader's Discretion is Advised. The Story The story is a dark tale about two dogs escape out of an animal research laboratory and their life outside of that cruel place over a month period. The story is very engaging and original. So it will keep you guessing about the character's fate throughout the film. It will keep you hooked and emotional throughout the film. The Characters There are many characters in the film. Ralph, Snitter, The Tod and all of the human characters. All of the characters are developed very well and we see all of the characters point of view upon the whole crisis. The film shows us the two dogs back stories and it has a lot to keep you engaged. When you come back and see the film a second or a third time or many more times after that, you will notice things that you didn't notice before, so it is a great movie to come back to. The Animation/Special Effects The animation is smooth and very well done. The sound quality is well done and the characters do a very good job at voicing the characters. IMPORTANT NOTE: The uncut version of the film was very rare before the DVD was released, so only a few film reels remained when Optimum Releasing put the uncut version on the DVD, so the quality of the film is a bit grainy from the reels age and at no fault of the animation team, but don't worry, the film is still watchable and enjoyable. Just a green line on the right side of the screen at the beginning of the film is as bad as it is going to get. So don't worry, the DVD is NOT broken. Final Thoughts Overall, this movie is an underrated classic. It is one of my favourite films. This movie should be watched by all, but the movie has a lot of blood and gore (Even the 82 minute version has a bit of gore in it) so I don't recommend young children watch Plague Dogs till they are about 12 years or older. So if you are looking for a great classic which is not made by disney, then this movie is for you! For those who don't enjoy watching animals in pain, blood or gore, avoid this movie like the PLAGUE! I also recommend reading the book this film was based on, 'The Plague Dogs' by Richard Adams. The Story 5/5 The Characters 5/5 Animation/Special Effects 5/5 Overall 5/5 IMPORTANT NOTE: Both the 82 minute version and the 99 minute uncut version is on the Optimum Releasing DVD. So you can watch both versions of the film and compare them and you can decide which is a better film for you.
