When I first saw this film was on Netflix, and read it's summary, I thought it would be a very dull and uninteresting film, where nothing much happens. But actually, this film about a Welsh construction worker making important phone calls on a drive down to London is actually very good. Tom Hardy's performance as Ivan Locke is one where he really shows his acting range. Ivan is making very important phone calls, he makes one call to tell his wife that the reason he is driving to London to go to a hospital to be with a woman he had an affair with while on a business trip while she gives birth to his child. At the same time as trying to keep his family life together he is trying to make sure everything is okay for a cement pour for a construction build. Ivan battles with himself as he tries to prove to himself that he is not like his father, who cheated on his mother and abandoned him at a young age, Ivan between phone calls has conversations with his deceased father who he is imagining is in the back seat of the car. This film is very good looking visually, and even though the entire film is shot inside a car and the surrounding areas as Ivan drives, the cinematography, lighting and camera angles do a great job of showing Ivan Locke's emotions as he makes the calls, and the tone of the film. Locke is the sort of film you go into thinking that it won't be that good, but the drama of the family problems, the panic of trying to arrange and make sure everything is okay for a cement pour alongside Tom Hardy's incredible performance will have you enjoying the film more than you think.
