Zodiac is directed by David Fincher (one of my favourite directors of all time) and is more or less a biopic or a collection of biographies of people involved somehow in the Zodiac killings and the immense struggle to solve them. This is one of Finchers lesser known films, but in my opinion it's great. So what did I like? First let's talk about the aesthetic (aw come on you know me) because it is rarely matched by a film based on a real life event. In this movie, you feel like it's the 60s. The music, the design of cars, costumes and scenery and just how accurate this is. David Fincher spent a lot of effort in making this look pretty much exactly like what it would have looked like in real life. Another great aspect is the tone. I mean, woah. Just woah. This film manages to be eerie and off putting, but also enticing and inspiring. Everytime I watch this movie I do a quick google search to see if anybody has found anything on the Zodiac case, because it is so interesting. This movie is very tense in parts. Not only are these tense scenes well directed, acted and edited but the fact that this actually happened makes it even more tense; I love it. Speaking of acting, Jack Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo are excellent in this movie. They are believable and really enjoyable to watch. The writing is excellent. This movie is almost three hours long, but it wastes absolutely no time without a doubt. Every main character is fleshed out and well written. The pacing is not too slow or too fast and everything just has this raw and realistic feeling to it. One thing I loved is the way the killing scenes are done. There is no dramatic music and the killings are long and drawn out. This movie also has one of the best ambiguous endings ever, as not only does it leave you wanting more, but it links into real life. It's hard for me to find any problems, so I apologise if my review is biased and one sided. Oh well, Zodiac is a cool film that I'll definitely watch again one day. I'd say it's my third favourite Fincher movie after Fight Club and Seven. Thanks for reading!
