I am a proclaimed Browncoat, or a superfan of the Joss Whedon's cult TV show Firefly, which was cancelled after just one incredible season by the idiots working at Fox. So you can imagine how excited I was when I found out that there was a movie continuation from the show called Serenity, starring the original cast, written and directed by the creator and distributed by Universal, not Fox! I was so eager to see this film, and boy did it live up to the hype. Serenity is a thrilling film, made with flare by genius director Joss Whedon. His style is kinetic and is just so entertaining. There is an incredible tracking shot near the beginning that will make your eyes water with amazement! Plus, his screenplay is absolutely magnetic, not messy at all, with a bucket-load of fantastic lines that you will quote for the rest of your life! It is a complete joy to see the characters you know and love again as well. Nathan Fillion's Captain Mal Reynolds is one of the coolest characters ever created, and Fillion's performance is just amazing. You've also got the hilarious character of the pilot Wash played by Alan Tudyk and the just awesome second in command Zoe played by Gina Torres. I could go on about how brilliant every character on board the ship is for weeks but you'd probably get bored, so in conclusion, the characters are just flawless. You connect with them emotionally and your always worried when they're in peril. You've also got Chiwetel Ejiofor's cool-as-ice villain The Operative. He is just such an icy person and you are absolutely terrified of him. He's not as scary as the Reavers though. The main antagonists of Firefly's scariest episode Bushwhacked, they will give you nightmares from their appearance in this movie as well. There are many incredible action sequences in the film also - to many to mention all of them. I will just single out a breath-taking chase set in space and a Reaver invasion near the beginning. All performed with believability by the actors and directed smoothly by Whedon. But crucially, Serenity doesn't only work if your a die hard fan of Firefly. If you've never even heard of the show, then you can still in joy this edge-of-your-seat sci-fi thrill ride. Verdict: Whether your a fan of Firefly or not, Serenity is an insanely enjoyable sci-fi with great characters, amazing action and some of the best one-liners since The Terminator. PS. Mal shot first!
