Belle, released in 2014, is a theatrical adaptation of historical events concerning the illegitimate offspring, Dido Elizabeth-Belle, of a bi-racial affair. Prior to departing on his travels, the Dido’s father burdens his aristocratic great-uncle with her presence. Growing up in the strict English class system, the film explores the racial insensitivity many non-white people faced in 18th century and focuses around the Zong Ship case, which consequently, led to the outlawing of slavery in Britain. The film is a refreshingly heart-warming piece of cinema. It explores the goodness within some and the hatred within others.
