I had been told by so many people how good the film is but I didn't think it was quite as good as people had told me it was. I still liked the film though and thought the way the movie was put together was really good. I thought there where a few specific scenes which where amazing. The director was an Australian, Baz Luhrman who is a very famous director who has directed many famous films including Romeo and Juliet. He has worked on multiple films with Leo DiCaprio, who is the main character in The Great Gatsby. I thought Leo DiCaprio was great in this film. It was very easy to believe his character which is pretty impressive considering how many films we have seen him in. The style of the film was very lavish and all about the partying lifestyle at the beginning of the film especially. The film is a romantic tragedy with tainted love set in America but uses the famous British actress Carry Mullegan. I thought she was good and a believable character considering she is an British actress staring in an American film. The film is based on a normal guys who moves next door to a very unordinary guy. He gets thrown and stuck in the middle of a complicated love affair which lands him in an uncomfortable situation. The film shows Gatsby as being in love with a cruel woman who doesn't really love him. The film is set in a loop, starting at the end. We see how one of the main characters ended up at the beginning then they explain to us why he has ended up in that way. The film is very dark and tragic but try to do upbeat things to cover the darkness, like all the parties Gatsby throws. The reason behind all the lavish parties is him wanting to find his true love again. The film was set in the 1920's but still felt quite modern. It definitely didn't feel like it was set in the 1920's which I actually really liked as I'm not keen on supper old films. The music also wasn't old music. There was very modern music in there with a Will.I.Am track in there along side other great songs. On the whole the music was more contemporary pop. I thought the music went really well with the style of the film. I thought it matched the film perfectly. I think the film is aimed towards late teens/adults. It isn't really a film for children to watch. The director has made it more stylish and modern to target the younger audience. The film was a romantic tragedy which is the same as Romeo and Juliet, two films which where directed by the same director.
