Streaming Pilot. Selma is a true-story drama that follows Martin Luther King Jr in his struggle for black Americans to gain accessible voting across the US. At no point during my viewing of this film did I feel disinterested or disengaged; the amazing acting from all characters throughout makes the drama intense and riveting for the viewer, whilst it's accurate, unsettling depictions of violence clearly define it's serious message. By judiciously using these irrational acts of violence, Selma brings up many thoughts questioning our own morality. Some of the best scenes of this movie are so ingeniously immersive that they once again instill this sense of questioning. Don't by any means, however believe that this movie is entirely depressing; the film has a good amount of both conversation and action, while also throwing a few jokes in. Despite it's storytelling and presentation, I don't feel that this movie will be very memorable to me. It blends in with the many other historical dramas out there, and that's a shame. This film needed something, I believe, to set it apart from similar films. Selma is a great film to watch as an older family, as many of the issues are important to understand, and could also provide conversation on their possible echoes today.
