.This film is a historical drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain. The film is inspired by true events of those who risked all they had for women's right to vote - their jobs, their homes, their children, and their lives. The story centres on Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother. She works in a laundry, where mistreatment of young girls and women in the workplace as sexually available for the manager is rife. The treatment of these women at work and in their homes by men who regard them as property stirs Maud to agree to secretly join the U.K.'s growing suffragette movement. The violence of the police towards these women is shocking. The doggedness of the police to catch and punish suffragettes force Maud and her fellow suffragettes underground to plot and carry out protests and acts of civil disobedience to promote their cause. I thought the film was excellent and portrayed the huge amount of suffering women went through to give us the many freedoms we currently enjoy. I hope I never forget or become complacent about their sacrifices. I am glad I watched this film.
