The Seventh Son v The Spook's Apprentice

3 stars

22 Nov 2017

I read the book; the Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney and then watched the film of the book, The Seventh Son. I prefer the title of the book because it draws you in. Also I would rather the old feeling it gives you.

The place it was filmed was Vancouver but the book was set in Lancashire, which is up by Yorkshire. Vancouver is in British Columbia- very different places. I prefer Lancashire because it seemed more historic.

Mother Malkin is the main witch and becomes stronger as the blood-moon comes out. Mr Gregory is the Spook and is one of the main characters. He did not meet my expectation in the film because the Spook holds back more in the book and is more mysterious. Tom Ward is his apprentice and he also didn’t meet my expectation because in the book he is turning 13 but in the film he looks 18-20.

The book is so much better in so many ways as it gives you more tension and atmosphere. I would have made the film closer to the book. I enjoyed the book a lot more as it seems more realistic. I think the author, Joseph Delaney, would feel terribly disappointed because the film is nothing like his book.
