Good Storyline-Annoying Songs

3 stars

07 Jun 2018

I want to start by saying I am not the "greatest" fan of musical films (see what I did there). Despite this, I will not try to be unbiased as I physically can't. Everything from the music to the random outbreaks of song just feels unnecessary. I will admit the storyline did interest me; the thought of going from nothing to being one of he most successful people in the world is a factor that always gripped me. I just feel like the addition of songs in random pieces of dialogue.

The songs at times were catchy and you could probably catch me tapping my foot. They matched the film perfectly at times, but two men having an argument in a bar? Not the time for music. The film starts with a boy (soon to be Hugh Jackman) who is in love with a girl (Michelle Williams as Charity) who is many classes higher than him. Eventually, they fall in love, but Barnum ( Hugh Jackman) wants more from the lower class life he dragged charity down to. He sets out to find the most curious and extraordinary people to join his show, but will the public be as amazed as he is?

I gave this film 3 stars because of the reasons above. The acting was brilliant and so was the plot, but the singing and dancing just made me cringe until I nearly turned it off at times.
