'Get Out' review -
In the vain of ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner’, ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘Stepford Wives’, ‘Get Out’ is a trenchant social thriller and directorial debut of Jordan Peele. The film follows an African American photographer, Christopher Washington played by the magnificent Daniel Kaluuya and his girlfriend, Rose Armitage (Allison Williams ) as they visit her caucasian family in rural America that consists of Dean Armitage ( Bradley Whitford ), Missy Armitage ( Catherine Keener ) and Jeremy Armitage ( Caleb Landry Jones ).
At the family house, an unnerving atmosphere is developed, fortified by the eerie nature of the black domestic staff such as Walter ( Marcus Henderson ), especially in the sequence when he runs out of the darkness towards Chris, Georgina’s harrowing smile ( Betty Gabriel). Lakeith Stanfield gives a suitably creepy performance as Andre Logan King in a sinister pre-credits sequence with Flanagan and Allen’s ‘Run, Rabbit,Run’ in the background which sustains the eerie tone.
During the party hosted by the Armitage family, the inexorably cringe-worthy liberal attitudes of the guests are disquieting. Also, Catherine Keener’s nuanced performance as Missy Armitage unnervingly offers to cure Chris’ habit of smoking through hypnotherapy which is prompted by the ringing of a spoon in a teacup. The constant feeling of dread and horror is appeased by comedic moments primarily through the use of the delightful transport security administration officer and best friend, Rod who encompasses the authentically hilarious reactions of the audience to the film’s events.
Unequivocally ‘Get Out’ shines when insinuating the underlying horrors of the genteel masquerade. However, in the cathartic third act, the effect of the horror and credibility inevitably decreases as suspense is interchanged for revelation. Nevertheless, the stellar performance from the cast perpetuates the dramatic energy of the scenes aided by Michael Abel’s compounded score.
‘Get Out’ is impeccably made, incessantly entertaining, sharply written by Jordan Peele and startlingly shocking and horrific that will continuously keep you digging your nails into the arms of your seat.
Adolygiad 'Get Out' -
Yn debyg i’r ffilmiau ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner’, ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ a ‘Stepford Wives’ a ddaeth ynghynt, mae ‘Get Out’ yn ddrama gymdeithasol arswydus sy’n ymddangosiad cyntaf Jordan Peele yn cyfarwyddo. Dilynai’r ffilm ffotograffydd Americanaidd du, Christopher Washington gan yr actor godidog Daniel Kaluuya a’i gariad Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) wrth iddynt ymweld â’i theulu gwyn yn ardal wledig o America sy’n cynnwys Dean Armitage ( Bradley Whitford ), Missy Armitage ( Catherine Keener ) a Jeremy Armitage ( Caleb Landry Jones ).
Yn y tŷ teuluol mae naws anesmwyth yn datblygu, weddi’i atgyfnerthu gan natur iasol y gweision du megis Walter ( Marcus Henderson ), yn enwedig yn yr olygfa pan redai allan o’r tywyllwch tuag at Chris, gwên frawychus Georgina ( Betty Gabriel ). Yn ogystal mae perfformiad Lakeith Stanfield fel Andre Logan King yn anghyfforddus yn y dilyniant agoriadol gyda chan Flanagan ac Allen, ‘Run, Rabbit, Run’ yn y cefndir sy’n cynnal y tôn iasol.
Yn ystod y parti wedi’i gweini gan y teulu Armitage mae’r agweddau ymgreinio di-ildio rhyddfrydwyr yn anesmwyth. Yn ychwanegol, mae perfformiad arlliw Catherine Keener fel Missy Armitage yn cynnig i iachau arferiad Chris o ysmygu trwy hypnotiaeth wedi’i gynnal gan sŵn llwy mewn cwpan. Trwy gydol y ffilm mae teimlad rheolaidd o arswyd ac ofn wedi eu dyhuddo gan y golygfeydd o gomedi a ddaw yn bennaf gan y cymeriad braf Rod, ffrind gorau Chris, mae e’n cwmpasu ymatebion dilys y gynulleidfa mewn modd doniol iawn.
Yn ddigamsyniol mae ‘Get Out’ ar ei orau wrth ensynio'r arswyd cynnil, gwaelodol o’r sefyllfa foneddigaidd. Fodd bynnag yn y drydedd act carthlyn mae effaith yr arswyd a hygrededd y stori yn lleihau gan fod y ffilm yn ymgyfnewid pryder am ddatguddiadau. Er hynny mae perfformiad gwych y cast yn bytholi’r egni dramatig o’r golygfeydd wedi eu cynorthwyo gan gerddoriaeth gymhlyg Michael Abel.
Mae ‘Get Out’ wedi’i greu yn fanwl iawn, mae’n difyrru yn barhaol ac wedi’i ysgrifennu yn arbennig o dda gan Jordan Peele ac yn frawychus yn ddi-baid.
