Deviating away from thrillers, Hitchcock's fun, action packed adventure 'North by Northwest' is a refreshing film that holds up 59 years later.
Firstly, the film was a risk for Hitchcock, as the 'Master of Suspense' takes a break from psychological examinations like 'Psycho' to make a light-hearted, funny film. That is my biggest compliment of 'North by Northwest'- it was funny. Perfectly integrating his mastery of the camera, despite the film's tone being very different to the rest of his work, Hitchcock's fingerprints are all over this film. From the iconic crop scene, with the subtle foreshadowing of the plane in the background, to the also iconic denouement, a thrilling, action-packed ending that perfectly concludes a somewhat convoluted story. Moreover, the twist is very Hitchcockian and well disguised and revealed.
Additionally, the performances throughout are exceptional; Carry Grant stealing the show, oozing charisma and blending the action hero with perfect comedic timing. Furthermore, Eva Marie Saint delivers a good performance, playing the love interest of Grant, but also a women who is strong enough on her own.
Whilst there are many positives of this film, it must be noted the story, whilst engaging, is convoluted and sometimes hard to follow. Applying logic to certain scenes and scenarios quickly dissect the film, however this is a fun adventure film, designed for you to sit back and enjoy, much like today's big budget action thrillers.
Overall, 'North by Northwest' is an impressive spectacle, displaying both Hitchcock's and Grant's range and holding up, even in a modern day audience. It is easy to see how and why this film inspired actors like Tom Cruise, with exciting, dangerous and light-hearted fun all blended seamlessly.
