Five Easy Steps wasn’t my favourite film to watch. The narrative seemed to be very complicated for a not very satisfying ending in relation to Jack Nicholson’s character Robert. His performance I felt was good but was too similar to One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest of McMurphy. I prefer to see actors playing different roles and seeing the contrast in characters.
Robert’s rebellious nature in scenes such as abandoning his car on the highway to jump onto a lorry and spontaneously to play the piano. There was no warming as to what was going to happen. Likewise, with the ending. There was no warning as to any of the actions he is going to take. It felt as if the film had suddenly stopped with nothing else to show. Form an audience perspective this was unsatisfying, and I would have wanted too to have seen a better conclusion.

Robert’s portrayal of men who are unconnected with themselves in some way and who are stereotypical of masculinity and selfish is the interpretation that I got as an audience member towards Robert. Even from the first few scenes between Ray and Robert, he was not listening to Ray, or only half-heartedly. Then throughout the film, he was sleeping with other women. This first started when Robert was in the bowling alley. The women are attracted to Robert but in a bad way, as this leads to cheating.
Robert also doesn’t seem to be a very moral abiding person. Robert gets away with cheating, and this for an audience isn’t showing a good version of yourself to the audience. Throughout the film, the plot gets more and more complicated and then not much happens at the end. You don’t even get the opinion or reaction of Ray, Robert’s girlfriend. It is just all about the men, and them being selfish.
