This film is an Oscar nominated historical documentary written by James Baldwin and he is referred to as ‘the most predominant voice of the Civil Rights Movement’. James Baldwin demonstrates a clear view of what black peoples’ lives were like in the 20th century in America and that they were treated like second class citizens. The actor Samuel L Jackson brings James Baldwin’s words to life.
The film documents the assassinations in the 1960s of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. These men were all powerful historical figures in America and were close friends of James Baldwin.
This is not a film I would usually choose to go see at the cinema or watch on Netflix though I found it interesting. I watched the film with the supertitles on as I found it difficult to follow and understand in parts. I felt it would be aimed at older people who are interested in American history or those studying History for GCSE or A Level.
