"Sonita" is a documentary but also the name of a talented, unusual girl rebelling against strict traditions. The Director with her camera captures the struggle of everyday life in Iran of a teenage girl originally from Afghanistan. Documentary film crews, as the film reminds us, are not supposed to influence the events they are recording, that leads to a lot of tension when events get tricky.
Sonita is a really interesting person who you grow to care about. We are going to look up what has happened to her after the film. It was really shocking to see what other families around the world think of as 'normal'. My whole family ended up watching this and were all drawn to this window into other peoples lives.
