Capitalism - A Love Story (2009)

“Capitalism: A Love Story” is a powerful and profound insight into the corruption and greed that plagued America for decades, culminating with the financial crash of 2008 that devastated millions of lives.

Its heavy going stuff, but Michael Moore always manages to balance the emotional portraits of the victims of the system with his trademark dry sense of humour. One moment you’ll be shocked by the false imprisonment of children and teenagers to make more cash for the fat cats, the next you’ll be roaring with laughter as Moore attempts to make a citizen’s arrest of the disreputable stockbrokers and bankers that demolished the world economy!

This ability to make the audience laugh and gasp simultaneously is what I love about Michael Moore’s films; they inform you about complex and disturbing subject matter whilst including moments of hilarious satire. “Capitalism: A Love Story” walks the fine line between unpleasant and enjoyable, it never strays too far over to one side but perfectly balances two very different tones.

Also, as pessimistic as it makes me sound, I love documentaries that uncover conspiracies and cover-ups, in which governments and politicians are involved in schemes to seize more power and money. I can’t explain why I like these types of movies, I just do.

In conclusion, “Capitalism: A Love Story” is an impactful and blazing deconstruction of the core of Western society. The movie shows us that our monetary system is deeply flawed, but it leaves us with hope that, one day, we will be able to create a better society that benefits 100% of the population, not just the top 1%.
