After watching the trailer for the first time I expected a standard horror movie which would include a few jump scares and the typical horror movie clichés. As I was right about the clichés I thought there would be more scary moments in the film and there was only one jump scare which I found disappointing. However, the movie maintained an intense story with entertainment throughout the 104 minutes.
The opening scene shows a man called Andre (we later found out that he knows Chris) gets dragged into a boot of a car while the song run rabbit run is blasting out loud which could be seen as a metaphor for Chris to get out of the Armitage house later in the movie. After that the audience is introduction to the cute and innocent couple Chris and Rose where they have a discussion over Chris having reservations about the fact that Rose has not told her family that he his black but Rose reassures him that everything will be fine. If you fast forward a bit Chris becomes aware that Roses family are not as nice as he first thought and begins to notice that everybody is acting weird around him at the party asking him uncomfortable questions and finding Andre who he recognizes but needs the help from his friend Rod. While at the party Chris has a comforting chat with a blind man who tells him that he’s an artist. After Chris got attacked by Andre for taking a photo of him with the flash on Chris and Rose decide to go home. After Chris found out Roses secret photos with other men and Georgina (the women servant who Chris had an earlier altercation with) he know something was seriously wrong with this family. But continued to trust Rose just before her ulterior motive was revealed along with her family. After Chris was about to lose all hope he discovered that Mr Armitage was about to undergo an operation between Chris and the blind man where Chris would go into the sunken place where he would fall into a passenger of his own body so the blind man can take control of him. This gave Chris the motivation for a perfect revenge story which ended in him killing everybody except from Rose because he still loves her. Overall, I would like to think the plot makes sense however there are a few things that question my judgement like the fact that Rod came out of nowhere and found Chris at the end which doesn’t seem realistic but provides a happier ending. Then the main thing that is defiantly not believable is how somebody else can control a different person’s body.
The most entertaining process of this movie was the build up to the plot twist and the plot twist itself because the audience saw Rose being supportive and standing up for Chris throughout the whole movie. Rose defiantly made out that she truly loved Chris which made it even harder to believe that she could betray him like that. I didn’t want to believe it at first so my first reaction was that the mother hypnotised her and then Rose could have saved Chris later on in the film. While, Chris and Rose had funny moments together I really felt like Rod brought the comedy to the film. This was important because when Chris would confine in Rod he would always come back with a funny remark. Now one of the bad things about the movie would be that it didn’t feel like I was watching a horror more like a thriller until the climax where everything got heated.
One scene that I particularly remember was when Chris got caught sneaking outside by Roses mother Missy which involves another cliché in a character sitting in the dark who turns on the lights as the protagonist walks past. I enjoyed this scene because we got to see Missy use her hypnosis on Chris where he was forced to revisit the moment of his mother’s death. In the moments leading up to the back story the conversation was going back and forth but once there was three taps of terror against the tea cup the audience really saw Chris at his best. There was pure emotion pouring out of Chris’s eyes as he was struck sitting in that chair. We later go onto find out that Chris’s mother could have survived if he or somebody else got her help while Chris was at home watching TV. This may have led for him to feel guilty in that sense so that’s why he decided to save the grandma at the end.
I would defiantly recommend this film for people who like dramas and thrillers instead of a horror on the bases of I didn’t find it scary but either way it was fun to watch. I also thought that I would be more in the drama genre because it highlights what people face in society and provides the directors fears.
There are a few films that are similar to get out like Rosemary’s baby, Green room, the gift and don’t breath as they all share similarities in what is happening in society with a tense atmosphere throughout the whole story.
