Russell Crowe stars in this fairly gruesome journey of a Roman General, Maximus. The historic epic was underpinned by a vast and acclaimed soundtrack of classical pieces. With accurate costumes and setting, this tale entailed a very good performance by Crowe which led us to side with him, and oppose Commudus - the incest craving son of Marcus Aurelius, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Connie Nielson played Lucilla, the unlucky sister of Commodus which over the film gained our sympathy. The Special FX in this film were pretty good and detailed in addition. I do have to say that it is a rather long film and in my opinion it did get a little boring at times. This unfortunately led me to be uncertain about the plot at times.
