Journeys end is a World War I film portraying the reality of life within the front line. We follow the adventure of a new officer Raleigh (Asa Butterfield) who contributes a naive innocence to the tense atmosphere within the company. Set in March 1918, the British decided that each company is to spend six days on the front line in order to be productive. This realistic depiction of war shows the mental strain on soldiers through the solemn coping methods and personality changes due to the extreme conditions and harsh images soldiers were exposed to. We are shown the bleak life of waiting in the trenches, with nothing but talk to get them through, as we understand the harsh outcomes of what took place during the ‘Spring Oblivion’. As we begin to develop attachments towards the main characters through the powerful personalities and moods presented through emotive cinematography, we are forced to realise that this is not a fairytale. I believe that although this film was very accurately presented, there were a few things that could have been improved slightly in order to increase the overall quality, including, more personal backstories; they help the reader to understand the character more. Despite this, I would recommend watching this especially for those who are oblivious to what our ancestors had to go through, as well as to those wanting to find themselves within a new era and transported into the past.
