Period Dramas are one of my favourite genres of film and as I’m also a Jane Austen fan, I knew I had to watch this new adaptation!
The film is amazing to look at. The cinematography done by Chris Blauvelt is mesmerising. I really liked his previous work in “Mid 90’s” so was really excited to see his style again! The film’s aesthetic reminds me so much of spring colours and is just absolutely beautiful.
Anya Taylor - Joy is fantastic as Emma Woodhouse. She captures the character so well and manages to bring her alive from the original book in the best way. Anya Taylor - Joy combines the comedy and romance of Emma to present a character that I personally found was really funny and loveable. The chemistry between Anya Taylor - Joy and Johnny Flynn is unmissable! As they both play their characters so well it’s no wonder they were amazing together on screen. Some other performances I loved were Josh O’Connor as Mr Elton and Miranda Hart as Miss Bates, although the whole cast boasts a stellar lineup!
The costumes in this film also blew me away! The attention to detail was fascinating and is something I always admire in period dramas. I loved seeing all the different dresses and colours and found them to be one of my favourite aspects of the film.
Another thing I really liked was how this adaptation managed to feel more modern and understandable than any other adaptation I’ve seen. Something about the style of this film felt very contemporary to me, something I especially love considering it can be hard to adapt 1800’s writing.
Overall “Emma.” was such a great film. Definitely one of my favourites for 2020 and I hope to see it picking up a few awards in the next award season! I’d recommend to anyone! Especially if you love a good rom - com or period drama.
