Classic student loves teacher-with a twist

4 stars

01 Dec 2021

The troupe of having a crush on a teacher has been capitalised on many times in the comedy genre, by high profile actors like Adam Sandler and now Rushmore joins the ranks. The general premise is the expected one, but the twist is that the student's mentor also loves the teacher as well, creating an interesting contrast between the friends. The signature symmetry of Anderson is also present, lending the film his quirky style creating a fun and engaging atmosphere. The acting is also very good, with the main actor having the charm and awkward charisma to carry the scenes he's in, the mentor having enough comedic timing to make him a likeable love rival and the teacher having enough wit to be able to hold her own in comedic moments. Pacing wise, the film is quite well structured and the viewer never feels bored due to a lot of events keeping interest in the film and its story, allowing for a more pleasant viewing experience. It does seem to lack more vibrant colours though, with a lot of drab pastel colours being used, which slightly takes away from the comedic premise of the film. Overall, it is quite an enjoyable film that has a certain heart and warmth.
