The first time I saw this film I really didn't know what to except. It comes across as a very innocent film at first, light hearted and an enjoyable family show. The gradual world building and repetitive nature of Trumans life becomes a comfort however when the wall starts to break and the truth is shown, the comfort is gone. Each time I've watched it I appreciate how you gradually see Truman realising what's been happening, you notice something new every watch. One scene that really sticks with me is where Truman starts his day off like any other, getting ready in front of his bathroom mirror and usually does something weird that people laugh at. However at the end of his whacky moment he addresses the camera in the mirror directly, ''That ones for free''. It's so subtle yet really clever at setting the tone for what's to come. The dystopian feel to the film can be compared to any film that shows a control over the main character, although I don't know any, it's a clever concept that can make for some interesting ideas. Films like 1984 are definitely ones that come to mind. The sound and music also help add to the overall feel of the film, a TV show in a film that is. The upbeat tone that makes knowing what happens more uncomfortable. The confined space the film takes place in, blocking ever exit makes us the audience have more sympathy for Truman and have a hatred for everyone involved in the show. I really do urge you to watch this film, it's well rounded, well written and well executed. Funny, heart warming and creates tension when needed. It really is one of my favourite comfort films because of how it never gets boring and some vfx and sfx are still passible compared to new films.
