I mean- this movie is all about ‘new girl meets toxic, popular girls’ energy, don’t we all love a cliche! Although made after classics like Breakfast Club and Ferris Buelers’ Day Off this movie is arguably one of the best movies about teen high school cliches and clichés. We are introduced to our leading lady, Miss Cady Heron, who is introduction to the school is being reduced to the new girl. Soon enough she finds herself acquainted with the popular crowd aka “The Plastics”, their infamous name inferring they are the ‘Barbie dolls’ of their generation. So when Cady joins the group, her initial intention is to serve a plate of justice for all the terrible things they’ve done, because - well they’re ‘Mean Girls’. However, we see even sweet, innocent Cady can’t resist the popularity and power she holds and this consequently causes tension between the bridges she built.
This movie has some incredible actresses such as: Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams & Amanda Seyfried to name a few. And all of them manage to portray such incredibly brutal characters, which comes off so convincingly it’s hard to believe they aren’t as harsh in real life. The setting of the high school also continues the realistic atmosphere by familiarising us with the cool spots to hang out and the lunch table layout. Also seeing the revolution of the characters in the movie is a good example of happy endings or character arcs. And because of this the ending is one of the sweet moments of the movie. The only thing I didn’t like was it was a little predictable, however I feel like I’ve got to make an allowance due to the type of movie Mean Girls is.
