Ready Player One is a futuristic film set in a universe where everyone is addicted to a VR server called the Oasis. It follows a teenage boy called Wade, who is trying to collect three keys in the game in order to inherit the creator’s fortune, in competition with an organisation called IOI. A large majority of the film was made using CGI, which looked pretty good and convincing. The characters were alright, but none of them felt particularly compelling to me, especially Wade, who felt like a really generic dystopian protagonist, and Artemis, who’s main purpose in the film was to be the love interest. On that topic, the side romance felt quite forced and wasn’t really necessary for the plot. Although predictable, the plot was interesting and compelling enough for me to enjoy this film. My favourite part would have to be all the references to other media that they included, which I also think is the most unique part of the film. Good if you want an action film to watch with friends, but don’t expect a masterpiece.
