All about my mother is a film directed by Almodovar released in 1999. The film is extremely funny in parts while simultaneously being tragic, Almodovar draws the viewer into initially thinking this film will be about a mother and sons relationship an although motherhood is a key theme of the film it expands into an exploration of the very bottom of Spanish society. Almodóvar focuses on prostitution, drug abuse and sexual violence which is akin to how Scorsese explores the very bottom of American society in Taxi Driver although I feel like Almodovar approaches it in a much easier way to digest. The film builds suspense as to who Lola is, who has impregnated several women, the reveal is half infuriating and half tragic. Although the film is extremely hilarious in the way it portrays sexuality Almodovar never lets the audience forget the tragedy that underpins the comedy in the film leading to some extremely heart-breaking scenes as we watch characters cope with their own mortality and their own response to the grief they feel. The cinematography is incredible and through the use of the camera Almodovar creates such a vivid representation of Madrid and Spanish culture. I cannot recommend this film enough 5/5
