Why the the Super Mario Bros Movie is the best video game adaptation

5 stars

15 Oct 2023

This movie despite made by Illumination and the reveal voice cast, this movie manage not to fall like the rest of the video game movies (expect the Sonic movies) which strays too far from the games. The movie references aren’t like shoved in your face and force to say “wow” ,instead the reference are used into the plot and world building of the movie rather being a small detail (e.g Kongs have the karts and are a overconfident group and the Rainbow Road).

Plot: The movies plot is simple like most illumination movies but it’s not a boring one. The plot stay true to the games since most plot in the games are simple so the director’s don’t have to change it much which is a good thing and that’s I want from a Mario movie. I’m not saying this is the greatest movie of all time but this dose it right.

Characters: The movie characters are way better then the game counter part because I found them more interesting. Mario is an improvement from the games!Mario in the games is kinda boring I’m not he is a terrible character any means just kinda boring. Mario is a little complicated since you can’t make him a sarcastic dude since that isn’t a Mario thing and it is insulting to the creator. (Shigeru Miyamto) The movie give Mario a inner struggle makes him a more interesting and a entertaining character. We care about him because he needs to prove himself to his father which he thinks he is a failure actually make us care and route for him. I like that Mario isn’t perfect at everything since he needs to do training before he succeeded make him a more compelling character and he never gives up even in the hardest of circumstances proving that he is a true hero but it’s also a subtle way to reference the idea to the players will likely fail at something in the game multiple times until we get it right. I love what they did to Mario and Donkey Kong relationship. The two are rivals at the start like the original game. The both have dads that think they are a failures to prove themselves. The difference is that Mario never gives up but Donkey Kong is so overconfident that he can’t understand why he is a failure. The both of them realised that beating each other is going to make it hard since the problem is Bowser, it’s clear working in a team is much better then being enemies which is another element of this movie makes more interesting and stay true to the games respectful. The is some criticism about the Mario as Chris Patt and Donkey Kong as Seth Rosen performance is kinda weird but I don’t agree I think they did a perfect job of bringing the character to life and never I was pulled off the movie. Same as Cranky Kong too. Speaking of King Koopa himself Bowser is a amazing villain, his voice actor Jack Black dose an amazing job and you can tell he is having a lot of fun of it! In the games Bowser is kinda a lame villain ,his goal is to capture Peach and that’s it, in the movie Bowser doesn’t just want to capture Peach rather he wants to marry her (like in Mario Odyssey) because not for the sake of it because that what he wants the most not just politically taking over the world but to make her his wife and it’s hysterical to watch. The princess herself Princess Peach is a great character I mean she is tough but she cares about her friends and the Toads. I like the directors don’t think she is outdated because she was always capture and happened to be a woman but thing is that there is purpose being an adventurous hero, I mean come on she was a playable character in SMB2 and her rare and recent spin offs. So I found her character perfectly fine and doesn’t strayed too far from the games and avoid the criticism of the damsel of distress clichés plot trope. And our last character worth mentioning is Luigi. Luigi is an excellent character he care for Mario which is pretty wholesome despite getting less screen time and Charlie Day gives his best voice performance in his life.

Animation: The animation in this movie is incredible and extremely accurate to the games and characters designs which is impressive for an Illumination movie. Hot take I like the character designs in the movie even more then the games. The animation fits perfect in an illumination style and giving it an upgrade to make the texture more real but not too real unlike some Illumination movies like Sing.

In conclusion: What is the word I used describe The Super Mario Bros Movie is…Innovative! The movie is Innovative in lots of ways! It was Innovative with its animation, it’s was Innovative how clearly of using Mario games mashed together to make a cohesive plot and It’s was Innovative of adding interesting things while still staying true to the games. This movie is a celebration of all Mario games and characters. This movie deserves the tones of money it’s gets. This movie shows that Nintendo is no longer strictly with there franchises and rather experiment ideas. We Nintendo fans have a new Universal attraction, more new experimental games coming up like Super Mario Wonder and a movie we have not gotten for a long time. This is why the Super Mario Bros Movie is the greatest video game adaptation!
