Somehow this movie made by Illumination (who made the most mediocre movies ever) and the reveal of the voice cast this movie manage not to fall flat like the other video game movies ( except the Sonic movies) which some are fine but not truly amazing but this movie is actually really good, I'm not saying this is the greatest movie of all time but it done it all right and even better then any other video game movie adaptions. (Skip this statement if you like) I got to asked you why is Mario so successful in the first place, is it the plot? No Its the unique art style and jazzy music but adapting the video game in a movie is kind of hard because you can't change some elements from the games like making Mario a jerk is not how to do that. The reason why I bring up the games plot because most are pretty basic and how are the writers going to make a good story but it has to being entertaining. Plot: I love the plot of this movie because It has a simple plot like all Illumination's movie but its not a boring one, the plot is a mashed-up of the other Mario games which actually worked which is ironic because the writers don't have change much to the games and its not confusing like do we need a side plot where Wario or some else fills in the movie. No I don't need a complex or an emotional dramatic movie, you got to remember when adapting a movie you need to get the point what people alrighty liked. The references of the previous Mario games is not a detail instead its a part of the movies story which I love and none of it is just throwed in your face ,its on the nose or force you to laugh with cringe humour like Ralph breaks the internet . I hear some people criticize the movies plot being rushed but I strongly respectfully don't agree because I like the simple plot and if its the release date is early then is a rushed movie. Characters: The characters in the movie are far better then the games counter parts because its more interesting. Lets off with the man Mario himself. In the games Mario in my opinion is kind of a boring character, not saying he is a terrible written character any means his just meh. In the movie in the other hand he is interesting protagonist because the writers give him a flawed inter struggle about proving himself he not a failure as his farther believes and I love he hates mushrooms which makes Mario a more entertaining character. I love when Mario trained himself in the training scene because its a way to give an idea to the players that when you first place play it you will fail again and again until the players get it better. Its time for Donkey Kong because oh boy I love his relationship with Mario because not only its a call back to the arcade game 1981's Donkey Kong and the arcade game is adapted in the movie. The two have dads who think the two are failures had to prove themselves but the difference is that Mario never gives up but Donkey Kong dose give up because he is overconfident (e.g. when he is showing off to his fans in the fight scene) that he can't not understand why he is a failure. At the end the two work together since Bowser is a problem so fighting each other is going to make themselves harder and the two dads are proud of them showing that anyone is capable of doing anything regardless how much their parents doubt them. I hear some people say that Chris Pratt as Mario and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong voice are weird but I do not agree because I think they do an amazing job of bring the characters to life in my opinion. Who needs a good hero if there is no villain like Bowser because Bowser is an amazing villain. Seriously the voice actor Jack Black is having the best role of his life! But any way Bowser is more an interesting character then his game ,in the games is a kind of a lame villain because his roles is to steal Princess Peach. In the movie Bowser's motive is to kidnapped the Peach because he wants to marry her to impressed her by stealing the star and destroying kingdoms its hysterical and funny to watch and its a reference to the whole plot in Mario odyssey which is a smart move. I like how troops didn't turn his back on Bowser after the announcement. Speaking of the queen of the Mushroom Kingdom Princess Peach is an great character because I like how she trained Mario before he go to their adventure, she maybe less girly from her game counter part but she cares about her Toads and isn't like those saving cliche tropes since she happen to be a woman which I'm glad it wasn't her. So if Peach dose not need to be saved then who? Oh yes I have saved the last for best Luigi! Charlie Day dose an perfect job of capturing Luigi's character. On paper Luigi and Peach role swap by Luigi getting kidnapped instead of Peach sound stupid but if you think about it, it's clever writing move because if Peach get kidnapped then we don't much about her , Luigi character is alright establish at the start and we might see those stupid brother character separated tropes but thankful we didn't get that. I wish Luigi get more screen time. Animation: It is a huge step up from the other Illumination's standard movies because the visuals looks stunning and it doesn't looked bland like Sing or Secret life of pets movies. The background designs are beautiful and accurate to the games. Hot take I preferred the movie character designs over the games! Music: The music is blowing my socks away because it has other games mashed into one is very catchy and prefect. Comedy: Its pretty funny especially when Bowser is on screen and it doesn't have the childish humour unlike the rest of Illumination's movie library. Final thoughts: Now do I think this is the best Illumination movie? Yes is totally the best one even better then Despicable me! Is it perfect? Sorry no! Is it the best movie of the year? No but its properly my favourite movie of this year. Conclusion: The one word I describe The Super Mario Bros Movie is.... Innovative! Its innovative mashing games and references into one cohesive story, innovating the animation and innovating the video game movie genre! For some reason the cool movie critics didn't take kindly to the movie and hates it! Saying the story needs to have more stuff or not modern enough. The two examples are just wrong because this movie is celebration to its games and characters and the movie deservers the 1.36 Billion cash! This movie feels genuine with its box office unlike the rest of Illumination's movies. This is why The Super Mario Bros Movie is the best video game movie adaption ever!
